We began this course by examining European conquest of the New World. Those early forays across the ocean laid the groundwork for European colonial expansion, which reached its height in the nineteenth century. Though European colonialism began to break up in the twentieth century, the legacy of colonialism shaped the events, politics, and culture of the twentieth century in many ways.
