Does anyone know what kind of surgery will be performed for a thoracic herniated disc pinching a nerve?

had a pinched nerve in the thoracic region for 20 months now and finally going to get surgery, but he did not say what kind,and said i will still have pain,he is only doing this because if not eventually i would be paralyzed did anyone ever go through this?
