It seems to me that when people with differences as you suggest get together, they often unintentionally end up offending just from ignorance of the other's beliefs. Then the offense turns into major differences and an attitude toward separatism. Cultural differences that make it difficult for them to cohabit if there is no effort to understand. Maybe even a fear that the others will try to force them to change. An interference into their peace and equilibrium. Even athiests can't seem to tolerate a cross in a cemetary. They somehow seem to take it as an effort at judgment. Maybe they're vampires. Just kidding.
